Report on WARBIRDS MUSEUM VISIT

72 club members and guests arrived at Ardmore on a beautiful day, and assembled outside the Warbirds HQ for a briefing.

We were organised into four groups, each led by a very knowledgeable volunteer guide who escorted us through the two hangars, with detailed commentaries on each of the aircraft, and in some cases the history of who had flown them. It truly is a magnificent collection of historic aircraft, even though the older ones are authentic replicas for the most part. And on the upper mezzanine floor, many of us spent time examining the huge collection of scale models.

Chris Fidoe also took a lot of photos on the day. See Chris's photos here

On Sunday 4 June, the 'Warbirds on Parade' airshow will open at 9am when all flyable aircraft will take to the skies once again. If you would like to support the Warbirds Association or join as a Volunteer, there are more details on their website where you can apply online.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

It is my pleasure to present this report and highlight the activities of your Club over the past 12 months. The year has again had some challenges as your committee of only eight members has, at times, been stretched to arrange some of the traditional activities.

In the latter half of 2022 your committee continued to meet via Zoom but, from our first meeting in 2023, we have been able to meet in a conference room in Air New Zealand’s Fanshawe Street ‘The Hub’.

The 19 October trip to Sculptureum near Matakana was an enjoyable day out and we ended up with 21 booked for the chartered bus and 23 for the Sculptureum. The bus departed from the Downtown Ferry terminal and we picked up three of our members on the way in Albany. Everyone enjoyed viewing the artwork and sculptures, many from galleries around the world, and members also enjoyed their lunch at the Restaurant. Our Bayes Coachlines bus was a near new 32 seater coach with lots of room to spread out for a very comfortable trip and our driver Terry was exceedingly helpful and congenial too. All in all, a very enjoyable and comfortable trip.

Our 2022 Christmas Lunch was a great success and with the large number of attendees, it almost felt like everything was back to normal. We were very fortunate in securing Richard Thomson, Air NZ’s Chief Financial Officer, as our guest speaker. Richard gave a very informative address as to the difficulties the airline faced in gearing up to operate post Covid services against a background of pent-up demand that outstripped their ability to provide enough seats. A most enjoyable lunch and the raffle was well received.

The trip to Warbirds at Ardmore on Thursday 20 April was very well supported. We were divided into four groups with each group being led by an enthusiastic Warbirds Volunteer who took us through their two hangars and gave a most interesting commentary on each aircraft. What surprised many of us was that most of the aircraft flew and were mostly owned by individuals or syndicates. At the end of the tour some of us were fortunate in seeing a rare dual controlled Spitfire (modified to take a passenger/ learner pilot) start up on the handstand, taxi to the runway and take off into the wide blue yonder. On board was a passenger who had flown from Australia for the flight.

Your committee has one member resigning at this year’s AGM – namely John Roscoe. John has contributed hugely to the Club over a considerable number of years. His Information Technology (IT) skills have been extraordinarily valuable and the Club’s current website is, amongst several other contributions, an absolute tribute to him. While John is resigning from the committee, he has agreed to be co-opted to assist the committee from time to time by mutual agreement. We thank John sincerely for his long service and also acknowledge and thank all the current Officers and Management committee members who worked diligently to keep your club operating. In addition, I would also like to warmly acknowledge the fact that Jo Foged stepped into the presidential role while I was overseas from late August through end October visiting close family post Covid.

Murray Robertson, President

YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU

Your Club’s constitution provides for up to 13 committee members, namely 3 officers comprising President, Secretary and Treasurer plus a management committee of up to 10 members.

Up until the June AGM this year, your committee comprises a grand total of 8 members (3 officers plus 5 management committee). With the resignation of John Roscoe and with no nominations yet received for the 2023/2024 committee prior to the distribution of this newsletter, the potential number of committee members for the upcoming year is now reduced to a total of seven.

All seven remaining committee members have agreed to offer themselves for re-election. However, at this year’s AGM, I complete my two year term as president and, as per the constitution, I become immediate past president and remain a committee member. In the absence of a nomination for president, long-serving committee member Jo Foged (who has previously served a two year term as president) has agreed to stand as president but for a term of only one year.

This situation needs to be quickly resolved. Surely there is/are some of our more than 500 club member/s with good communication skills &/or organisational skills &/or the ability to work well in a committee environment, who are prepared to offer their services and secure the club’s future ? Your committee usually meets six times a year.

Included in our appeal for more committee members, we also include those younger and/or recently retired staff that will be necessary, in the mid to longer term, to be able to take our club forward and, ideally, move it from strength to strength to secure its future.

THANK YOU

Murray Robertson, President

If you would like to volunteer, or nominate another member (with their permission) please submit a nomination form BEFORE FRIDAY 9 JUNE.
